Massive PSA, definitely don’t skip this one @everyoneAfter many discussions, we’ve made the difficult decision to sunset the Discord community in the coming week. This wasn’t an easy decision, especially given this is the first Techlore community almost 6 years old! Our reasoning for this is we feel our forum (https://discuss.techlore.tech/) has matured to the point where we feel it makes the most sense to have community members in one location that is better designed for the style of discussions we hope to see in the digital rights community. The forum emphasizes long-form content & nuance which we’ve been overwhelmingly happy with! Some other selling points that aided in this decision are:
Our forum is more privacy-respecting than Discord
Our forum has real-time channels for those of you who prefer the messaging aspect of Discord
Registration is much simpler! You can register with a single click through the SimpleLogin button (or yes even the Discord login! Check out the attached screenshot)
If you don’t want to create an account, you can still follow almost any part of our forum via RSS to still keep up with particular categories/tags without needing to register. Again, this is designed to be a more open community than Discord
Ultimately, I’d love to see the value and thoughtful discussions you’re all having here more easily accessible to people, so that you’ll be directly assisting people all around the internet—not just other Discord users. So I really hope to see many of you switch over, because the goal is to migrate your discussions to a better place where they provide value to more people—not to remove your discussions entirely. This is a finalized decision, but we’re keeping the server open to give you all an opportunity to say any goodbyes. Our shutdown date is February 5th Pacific time. I wanted to create a thread to welcome aboard any Discord-specific peeps looking to give the forum a shot so I can answer any questions and/or at minimum have a place to formally welcome you here
I appreciate you giving it a shot! After the initial adjustment period on my end I realized just how powerful it can be Also there are chats like Chat for you to still have some instant communication (similar to Discord—though a bit more limited)
If there’s something that isn’t working for you definitely let me know so we know how to improve things here!
Just joined this site even if I spent very little time on the Discord server. An achievement system for the most active forum participants is nice, but I’m mostly thinking of spending my time lurking around and maybe even participating in the chat channels.
Also just a quick reminder for you new peeps, something really special about the forum is it’s all partially moderated by everyone here
I made a guide on how to flag posts linked below. Pretty much if you see anything that you feel breaks a rule on our forum, just flag it! As your rep grows over time your flags will lead to certain decisions automatically.
Ex. If your flags are consistently approved just your flag alone can result in a post being completely removed.
Welcome Discordians to the land of the forum! During your trip, make sure to look out the right window to see all the topics and discussions. Please do not feed the trolls and make sure to customize your profile. Up in the right is the chat button, which will direct us to a similar place: an instant messaging chat, where you can converse with users more causally. I would recommend going through your preferences in the profile editor and turning on dark mode immediately. When creating a post, add relevant tags and use Markdown to make everything look nice.
